If baking paper catches fire in the oven, it can cause a lot of panic. We’ll show you how to react safely in such a situation, save your food, extinguish the fire, and avoid such incidents in the future.
Baking paper is burning in the oven – what should you do?
- Since baking paper burns quite quickly, in most cases there is no real danger. Turn off the oven immediately so that the convection fan does not blow the fire out of the oven. Stand to the side of the oven and carefully open the door.
- If only a small corner is burning, you can carefully tap the area with an oven mitt. If the fire spreads, it is best to let the baking paper burn out in the oven. Trying to frantically rescue your food can result in serious accidents and burns.
Baking paper: How it catches fire
- The packaging often mentions a maximum temperature of 220 degrees Celsius. Baking paper can be used safely at these temperatures, even for longer periods of time.
- If the temperature rises or the baking paper remains in the oven for several hours, nothing bad will happen. The baking paper will usually just turn dark and brittle.
- In most cases, baking paper burns when it is only lightly loaded and the oven is running on convection. If the baking paper then comes into contact with the upper heating elements or the back wall, it can quickly ignite.
