Transferring Office to a new PC: Step-by-step instructions

by Estelle

If you work with Office and want to transfer the program to your new PC, you want everything to be as usual. To make sure this works, this guide explains step by step how to proceed when moving.

1. Back up your Office data

Your Office subscription is linked either to a purchased product key or to your Microsoft account. If you purchased an Office product online from Microsoft, you only need your login details. However, if you purchased Office from another online retailer or on DVD, you will have a product key.

  • The product key for a physical copy can usually be found in the case or in the manual.
  • If you purchased Office online, check your emails. The product key is often sent by email or can be found on the invoice.
  • Make a note of the product key.

2. Uninstall Office

Once you are sure that you have all the necessary data to log back into Office, you must uninstall all Office applications from your old PC.

  1. Press the Windows key and type “Control Panel.”
  2. Click on the corresponding entry and navigate to “Programs > Uninstall Programs.”
  3. Search for Microsoft Office in the list.
  4. Right-click on the list entry to open a drop-down menu with the “Uninstall” button.
  5. Select this and follow the further instructions.

    3. Install Office on your new PC

Uninstalling Office has freed up an installation slot. Switch to the new PC and proceed as follows:

    1. Install Office from the DVD or download the relevant product, such as Office 365 or Microsoft Office 2016.
    2. When you start the program, you will need to either sign in with your Microsoft account or enter your product key.
    3. If you are unable to register, contact Microsoft Support to resolve the issue.
