Cleaning your hot air fryer: How to clean the appliance properly

by Estelle

You can clean your hot air fryer in just a few simple steps. Use the right materials to protect the non-stick coating of the air fryer.

Cleaning your hot air fryer: Housing, interior, and heating coil

Clean the interior and heating coil whenever there is a strong smell of food during preparation, smoke forms, or you notice that your meals taste different. Depending on how often you use your fryer, this cleaning may be necessary monthly or only once a year.

  • Unplug the appliance and make sure that the air fryer has cooled down completely before you start cleaning.
  • It is sufficient to wipe the outside of the housing with a damp cloth. For more stubborn stains, use washing-up liquid as well. To prevent water spots, dry the cleaned area with a kitchen towel.
  • Fill the outer basket of the fryer halfway with cold water. Then add the juice of two lemons.
  • Alternatively, you can use a dishwasher tablet for steam cleaning. Place 1 tablet in the cooking basket, fill with hot water (about halfway) and run the appliance at 180°C for 15 minutes. The rising steam effectively dissolves grease and residue. Alternatively, use baking soda instead of dishwasher tablets.
  • Place the cooking basket in the outer basket and insert both into the appliance.
  • Plug the Airfryer into the power outlet. Now run the appliance at the highest temperature for 20 minutes. The acid in the lemon dissolves even stubborn dirt when heated.
  • To clean the interior after heating, allow the appliance to cool down and unplug it again. Then wipe the heating coil and interior walls with a damp cloth.

Air fryer: Clean the baskets after each use

The baskets of the hot air fryer are usually dishwasher safe. However, to be on the safe side, check the manufacturer’s operating instructions. It is often better to clean them by hand, as the baskets are quite large and take up a lot of space, especially in small dishwashers.

  • Clean the baskets after each use.
  • Soak the baskets in hot water for several minutes if you need to remove burnt-on food. Mix a paste from one tablespoon of water and two tablespoons of baking soda. Apply this to the encrustation for 15 minutes before washing it off and continuing with the next step.
  • Dish soap and warm water are sufficient for cleaning. Use a dish brush or a non-scratch sponge to avoid damaging the non-stick coating. Never use metal sponges, as these will permanently damage the delicate non-stick coating.
  • Dry the baskets before placing them back in the appliance.
  • Tip: To prevent encrustations from forming in the first place, use special baking paper for hot air fryers.
