For perfectly steamed broccoli, you should make sure you buy good quality produce. Always buy fresh broccoli. The vegetable does not keep well. The florets quickly turn yellow and no longer taste good. To steam broccoli, prepare it as follows:
- Cut the individual florets from the stalk. You can use the stalk for soups, for example.
- Place the florets in a colander and wash them thoroughly with water.
- Have a large pot with a suitable lid ready.
Step by step guide to steaming broccoli correctly
Steaming broccoli correctly is easy, quick, and requires only a few steps.
- Bring a tablespoon of butter or oil and about five tablespoons of water to a simmer in a large pot.
- Add the broccoli and put the lid on the pot. The lid keeps the evaporating water in the pot and gently cooks the vegetables.
- The broccoli will be steamed in about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Season the florets to taste with salt, pepper, nutmeg, onion, or garlic.
- Tip: You can also use a bamboo steamer. To do this, simply bring some water to a boil, place the bamboo steamer on top of the pot, and then cook the broccoli in it.
