Cooling down in summer: Ingenious hot water bottle trick for hot days

by Tobias

As great as summer is, it’s much easier to sleep when you can cool down a little, for example with a cold hot water bottle. Using a hot water bottle in summer isn’t a completely new trick, but it’s still ingenious.

Hot water bottles in summer – how to keep cool

At night, when the heat in the bedroom seems to be standing still in summer, any kind of cooling is more than welcome. A hot water bottle offers really effective cooling – in summer, of course, used for its intended purpose as a cooling bottle.

  • The really ingenious thing about hot water bottles is that the cooling effect they provide is not just short-lived. With a hot water bottle, you have a pleasant bed cooler for several hours.

  • There are various ways to convert the hot water bottle into a cooling bottle. One option is to fill the hot water bottle with water and place it in the refrigerator a few hours before going to bed.

  • Another option is to fill the hot water bottle with ice cubes. To do this, use an ice cube tray that makes relatively small ice cubes. In this case, choose a hot water bottle with a large filling area. Make sure to leave some space in the hot water bottle.

  • Blue cooling pads are an alternative to hot water bottles. No matter which cooling option you ultimately choose, you should always wrap a towel or something similar around the hot water bottle. You should also avoid direct contact with the body, otherwise you risk getting cold burns. A good place for the cooled hot water bottle is at the foot of the bed, for example.

  • By the way: Cold showers have a few benefits. However, they’re not a good idea for cooling down before bed. You’ll end up doing the opposite of what you intended. Your body reacts to the extreme cold by trying to balance out the temperature as quickly as possible – which means it produces extra heat. If you want to shower, a lukewarm shower is much more sensible.
