If you have forgotten to put the garbage cans out in time for disposal, you have various options. These mainly depend on when you notice that the garbage cans are not outside.
What you can do if you forget to put the garbage can out
If you notice shortly after collecting the garbage cans that you have neglected to put them out on the roadside, this is nothing to worry about.
- In such a case, you should simply contact your local council’s waste collection service by phone and explain your situation. The refuse truck is often still on its way anyway and can empty your garbage can late.
- Some refuse collectors will make another round on their own initiative to check whether all garbage cans have actually been emptied. In some cases, you may be lucky and the problem will have resolved itself.
- Depending on the size of the municipality and your property or driveway and how busy the waste disposal employees are, they may have collected and emptied your garbage cans themselves.
- Legally speaking, refuse drivers are not allowed to do this. Entering the property is not permitted. However, some drivers are very friendly and see this as customer service, especially if they know that you would otherwise always put your garbage can out.
What else you can do if the garbage can has not been emptied
In most cases, however, you will only notice your mishap later, long after the waste collection service has completed its route.
- This is not a major cause for concern and does not mean that you necessarily have to store the waste until the next disposal.
- As a rule, there is always the option of contacting the waste collection company and booking an additional collection date.
- The price varies depending on the municipality. It is usually between 3 and 15 euros.
- Alternatively, you can also purchase special bin liners that you can place next to the garbage cans on the next collection date. These bags are usually blue or gray. Their price also varies from municipality to municipality.
- Otherwise, you can also take your waste to the landfill site yourself by car. Fill it into suitable containers or bags. Here too, you may have to reckon with costs.
It is also best to call in advance to find out if and when you can drop off your waste.
