If you want to change the password for an email address in Thunderbird, you can do so in just a few steps. We’ll show you how to do this and how to set a master password.
Changing the password for an email account in Thunderbird – Here’s how
If you have changed the password for your email address, Thunderbird will no longer be able to retrieve your messages because it will still try to access them using the old password. You must therefore also assign the new password in Thunderbird. Here’s how:
- Open Thunderbird and select the application menu with the three lines in the top right corner.
- Click on “Preferences” and then click on “Preferences” again.
- Navigate to “Security” on the left and then select the “Passwords” tab at the top.
- Click on “Saved Passwords” to see which accounts or server passwords are stored.
- If you click on “Show Passwords” and then confirm the process, the passwords will be displayed in plain text.
- Right-click on the entry you want to change, select “Edit Password,” and then change the password.
- Then save it by clicking “Close.”
- You should always choose a secure password.
Set and change Thunderbird master password
If you want to protect your saved passwords from unauthorized access, you can set a master password. You must enter this password when you want to access your email passwords.
- As described in the previous section, open the “Passwords” tab in the settings.
- Select “Use master password,” enter the desired password, and confirm it. Then save with “OK.”
- If you want to change the master password again in the future, simply click on “Change master password” and enter your old and new details. Save with “OK.”
