You can insert images in ChatGPT – this works in ChatGPT 4o. You don’t necessarily have to pay for this if you use the feature in a limited way.
Inserting your own images in ChatGPT: When it works and when it doesn’t
ChatGPT is a text-based AI developed by OpenAI that has been available to the general public since November 2022. If you are an AI fan and want to insert and edit your own images, this is entirely possible – but not for the ChatGPT o3-mini version.
- ChatGPT o3-mini is mainly optimized for text-based tasks and logical thinking. It does not currently support image input or image output.
- It therefore only responds to queries with text and cannot generate its own images.
- However, you do have the option of inserting images in ChatGPT 4o. You don’t even need a paid Pro version to do this. Please note, however, that version 4o mini does not currently (March 2025) support file attachments. This means that you cannot insert images in this reduced model.
How to insert images in ChatGPT 4o
The ChatGPT 4o version offers numerous exciting features, including the ability to integrate and edit your own images in ChatGPT. This is also free of charge.
- Open ChatGPT in your browser or in the official app.
- Use the upload function to select and upload an image from your device. You can do this using the plus sign at the bottom left next to the globe icon.
- After uploading, you can ask ChatGPT to analyze the image, describe it, or answer questions about it.
To pay or not to pay? Differences when inserting images
Why should you pay to insert images into ChatGPT when you can do it for free? Ultimately, paying users have more options.
- If you want to use the feature for free, you will quickly reach a daily limit. You can only create or upload up to two images per day.
- Paying users have a higher daily quota.
- ChatGPT Plus subscribers will therefore benefit from paying US$20 per month. This is reflected in increased AI availability and faster response times. They also have priority access to new features.
- For businesses, OpenAI also offers ChatGPT Team, a subscription for teams of two or more users.
