There are several ways to export a WhatsApp chat as a PDF. This allows you to save a chat history and print it out if necessary.
Instructions: Export WhatsApp chat as PDF
If you want to save a chat history on WhatsApp, you can easily export the conversation on both Android and iPhone and then convert it to a PDF file. Direct export as a PDF is not possible. WhatsApp sets an upper limit for message export – up to 10,000 messages including media or 40,000 without media can be exported.
- Open WhatsApp and go to the chat history you want to export.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner and then tap More.
- You will now see the Export chat option.
- Once you select this option, you will be asked whether you want to export the chat history with or without media.
- You will need to wait a moment, and then you will receive a TXT file, which you should send directly to yourself via email.
- Then open the file on your PC in Microsoft Word and save it as a PDF file.
Additional options for backing up WhatsApp chats
You can also use special programs to save and export your chat histories on WhatsApp.
- With Mobitrix, you can save WhatsApp chats as HTML files and then convert them to PDF files on your PC.
- Mac users can use iMazing to back up and restore WhatsApp data or save and print histories as PDF files.
- With iTransor, Android or iPhone users can transfer WhatsApp backups from their mobile phone to their PC and save them as PDF files. It is also possible to transfer WhatsApp between Android and iPhone.
- For short chat histories, you can simply take a screenshot on your phone and save the images in your gallery. If you want to combine them into a PDF, you can do so with tools.pdf24.org, for example.
Chats via WhatsApp Web: not possible
If you like using WhatsApp Web to chat directly on your PC, it makes sense to download your chats as PDF files.
- However, WhatsApp does not allow this either. If you open a chat in WhatsAppWeb, the three-dot menu does not even display the option to export the chat as a text file.
- This feature is therefore only available in the mobile app.
- However, you can use the print function in your browser to save chats as PDF files – for example, by selecting the “Save as PDF” option in the print dialog.
