Integrate PayPal into your own website – here’s how

by Johannes

If you integrate PayPal into your website, you don’t need to set up your own shop. This practical tip shows you how to add PayPal.

Integrate PayPal into your website: The PayPal buttons

PayPal offers its customers a very simple payment option: the “PayPal button” can be integrated anywhere on your website. The button is provided by PayPal and can be customized directly on the PayPal website and linked to your own PayPal account. However, you need a PayPal business account.

  1. To do this, go to the PayPal button page. After clicking on “Create button now,” a new window will open where you can configure your button.
  2. First, select a button type. You can choose between “Donate,” “Add to cart,” “Buy now,” and “Buy gift card.” The button label will change depending on your selection.
  3. Depending on your selection, you can now enter various information such as your internet address or a product name and price—these will then appear on the PayPal payment page.
  4. In the “Customize button” window, you can make various design changes or even set the link to your own button—very handy for web designers.
  5. Finally, you need to enter any optional shipping costs and your PayPal email address to which the amount should be transferred.
  6. When you click on “Create button,” PayPal generates HTML code that you can now embed anywhere on your website.

Costs for the PayPal button

There are no fees for using the button.

  • However, PayPal charges the normal transaction fees that would also apply on eBay, for example.
  • This is currently 2.49 percent of the amount received + 35 cents.
  • For donation payments, a reduced fee applies, usually 1.5 percent + €0.35.

Compatibility with shop systems – PayPal as standard

If you already use a shop system, you can usually activate PayPal with just a few clicks. Most platforms offer official plug-ins or interfaces.

    • Shopify: PayPal is integrated here as standard. After logging in with your business PayPal account, you can start using the payment service right away.
    • WooCommerce (WordPress): The free PayPal Payments plug-in is easy to set up and fully supports recurring payments, credit cards, and instant checkout.
    • Systems.io: PayPal can also be connected directly here to securely sell digital products, courses, or services—often without additional plug-ins.
