Setting up WhatsApp Web – here’s how

by Corinna

If you want to set up WhatsApp Web, you can do so in just a few steps. This allows you to use the messenger service on your PC or tablet as well.

Setting up WhatsApp Web on your PC or tablet

WhatsApp Web can be set up in just a few steps.

  1. Open web.whatsapp.com on your PC or tablet. A QR code will appear on the screen, which is required for login.
  2. Start WhatsApp on your smartphone. On iOS, you will find “Linked Devices” in the ‘Settings’ menu. On Android, open the three-dot menu in the top right corner and select “Linked Devices.”
  3. Tap “Add Device.” Your smartphone’s camera will open automatically.
  4. Hold your smartphone in front of the QR code on the PC screen until it is recognized. Once the connection is established, your chat list will appear in the browser.
  5. You can now use WhatsApp fully in your browser. Setup usually takes only a few seconds.
  6. As an alternative to “WhatsApp Web,” you can download “WhatsApp Desktop” as software for Windows and Mac. If you are using a very old computer with a very old operating system, the software may no longer be supported, but WhatsApp Web runs directly in the browser on all devices.

    Usage tips and features

After logging in for the first time, you will remain logged in on this computer until you log out manually. This means that when you open the same web page again, your account will be automatically connected.

    • Your smartphone must have a working internet connection while you are using the service, otherwise messages will not be synchronized.
    • With WhatsApp Web or Desktop, you can read and write messages and send attachments such as photos, documents, or voice messages. Files can be easily dragged and dropped into the chat window.
    • You can also link up to five devices to your account at the same time. You can manage these at any time and disconnect them if necessary in the “Linked Devices” menu item.
    • Please note: When using WhatsApp Web on public or shared computers, be sure to log out after use. To do this, either use the “Log Out” menu item in the browser or the settings within the mobile app.
    • Regularly check your linked devices in the WhatsApp app to identify and delete unwanted sessions.
    • If possible, avoid using public Wi-Fi networks so that your connection cannot be intercepted. A screen lock on your smartphone provides additional protection against unauthorized access.
