Which countries change their clocks: an overview

In Germany, the clocks are changed twice a year, so it is a country that changes its clocks. Summer time applies from the end of March and winter time from October. However, there are also countries that do not change the time.

  • EU, Europe, and Africa: In the EU, the clocks have been changed regularly since 1996. In Germany and Austria-Hungary, daylight saving time was introduced as early as 1916. The European and African countries Serbia, Switzerland, Vatican City, Ukraine, Liechtenstein, Morocco, Lebanon, San Marino, Montenegro, Monaco, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andorra, Albania, Great Britain, and Macedonia also change their clocks.
  • North America and countries in the northern hemisphere: In Canada and the USA, the clocks are changed. However, this takes place on different days than in Europe. This also includes Mexico, the Bahamas, the Bermuda Islands, Cuba, the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, Pakistan, Israel, and Libya.
  • The southern hemisphere: The southern countries of Chile, parts of Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Uruguay, Paraguay, Namibia, and parts of Brazil change their clocks to daylight saving time between the end of September and the beginning of November.
  • Other countries: Countries located near the North and South Poles and the equator keep their time unchanged, as changing it would not make sense. In China, daylight saving time was abolished in 1991. Syria, Jordan, and Iran also no longer change their clocks.
  • Many African countries in the middle of the continent have never changed their clocks. Northern Australia and most South American countries do not change their clocks. In Russia, the clocks were set to daylight saving time in 2011 and only set back one hour in October 2014. Since then, the clocks have not been changed.
