Many audio editing programs cost a lot of money, so we present three free alternatives. With these programs, you can record, play back and edit without incurring hidden costs.
Free audio editing
You can use an audio editor to edit music and voice recordings, or to filter out errors (such as noise).
- With audio editors, you can split, mix, change and add effects to your audio tracks. You should be able to do the basics, such as copy – paste – cut, with any editor.
- Your audio editor should have VST support (virtual studio technology). This is a programming interface for audio plug-ins. This allows you to use effects devices and instruments from other software.
- Apple saves audio files in AIFF format.
To edit these, you usually have to convert them into another format first. Which format depends on which formats are supported by your audio editor. It makes sense to choose an editing program that supports as many audio formats as possible.
Audacity
Audacity is a free editing program for audio tracks and can also be used as a recording studio.
- Audacity comes with its own effects and VST support (interface for audio plug-ins). You can add additional software and incorporate new instruments.
- You have the option of mixing, converting, changing playback speeds, inserting sound effects or even making your own recordings.
- The program supports some audio formats, such as MP3 or AIFF. You can convert these into other audio formats.
Ocenaudio
In addition to Audacity, you can also use Ocenaudio
.
- As a free audio editor, Ocenaudio is easy to use and offers cutting, pasting, copying and adding sound effects.
- You can cut, mix or edit your music using various frequency filters, expanders, compressors and reverb effects.
- Drag & drop allows you to insert your files and a VST interface lets you expand your program.
- The common formats (MP3, AIFF) are supported and the simple user interface makes it easy to use.
mp3DirectCut
mp3DirectCut is another free program for optimally editing audio tracks.
- Since converting formats, for example from AIFF to MP3, can lead to a loss of sound quality, mp3DirectCut offers the possibility to edit your audio tracks loss-free.
- You can use audio tracks directly in MP3 format and do not have to convert them to another format first. Your recordings are also recorded directly in MP3 format.
- The program shows the audio track of the audio well visualized (wave-shaped graphic). This makes it possible to selectively cut the audio track and enables a very good transition.
