Do martens eat cats – many owners of outdoor cats ask themselves this question. The short answer: martens do not usually eat cats. However, under certain circumstances it can lead to dangerous territorial conflicts.
Peaceful coexistence: how to protect your cat from martens
In most cases, cats and martens avoid each other. Nevertheless, there are some measures you can take to minimize the risk of conflict.
- If possible, keep your cat indoors at night, especially in the months of March to September when martens are rearing their young. With a climbing wall for cats and interactive cat toys, you can keep your pet occupied in the home at night and satisfy its natural urge to exercise.
- Avoid food scraps in the garden, as these can attract martens. Keep the garbage cans closed and don’t put any cat food outside.
- Close off possible entrances to attics, garages and garden sheds to prevent martens from finding shelter.
- Cat houses and outdoor sleeping areas should be elevated or screened off to prevent martens from having direct access.
- Lights, sounds and smells can help to keep martens away from the property. Motion detectors, music and the smell of vinegar or pepper can help repel martens.
