High temperatures, what to do? When it’s particularly hot, many people use a wet towel, which they hang in front of a fan. In this article, we explain whether this really helps to cool down.
Wet towel and fan: Do they help you cool down?
If you need to cool down in summer, you can use a fan and hang a wet towel in front of it, for example by hanging it close to the fan or attaching it directly to the fan. It is important that the towel is still damp but no longer dripping. This is particularly important because of the electronics.
- This little trick will help you beat the heat. You can’t expect miracles from this method and hope that this trick will cool you down as well as air conditioning could. Nevertheless, it is a good and inexpensive alternative for hot days.
- It is important to change the towel regularly, otherwise the effect will not be as noticeable. In addition, the fan must be directed into the room and not away from you, otherwise you will not really notice the cooling effect.
- Some people swear by this tip, but experts disagree: according to the German Building Climate Association, you should not use such sources of moisture to cool the room. The reason: when humidity rises, most people perceive it as more muggy, which could counteract the cooling effect. So it depends on your individual perception.
Be careful with damp towels in your home
Even if this trick has worked for you, you should not forget that this solution should not be used permanently.
- The reason is that wet towels also increase humidity, and if this settles in the walls, mold can develop. You should therefore use this method with caution and refrain from doing so if you have already noticed mold growth.
- Remember to ventilate regularly and properly to prevent such problems. You can find more information on proper ventilation in another home guide.
