Make your own humidifier – simple solutions
The ideal humidity level in your home should be between 40 and 60 percent. Increasing the humidity in your rooms will also make you less susceptible to illness. You can quickly make a humidifier with a few simple tools.
- You can make a very simple humidifier by hanging a damp dishcloth or towel over the radiator. Even expensive humidifiers don’t work any better. You can also use your freshly washed, still damp towels for this.
- Instead of towels, fill decorative bowls with water and place them on the radiator. Adding a little eucalyptus or peppermint oil to the water is particularly beneficial for the respiratory tract. Change the water once a day and clean the bowls thoroughly once a week. It is best to use containers that can be put in the dishwasher. This will kill any germs that may have formed.
- You can use plants as a natural humidifier. Cyperus grasses are particularly suitable for this purpose. They require a lot of water and release a corresponding amount of moisture. You will need at least 3 plants for 20 square meters.
Make your own humidifier with an ultrasonic nebulizer
If you want to spend some money, you can build your own electric humidifier.
- You will need an ultrasonic nebulizer, a plastic tube of any length with a diameter of up to 32 mm, a PC fan with a USB connection, a plastic container with a lid, and a step drill bit for your drill.
- First, you need to cut a hole for the tube, the nebulizer cable, and the fan.
- Insert the step drill bit into the drill and carefully drill the necessary holes at low speed.
- Plastic melts quickly, so it is important to make sure you use a low speed. Wear safety goggles for protection.
- Then insert or glue the pipe into the lid so that the lower part protrudes a few centimeters into the box.
- You can tape the hole for the fan on the sides with some electrical tape. This will seal it after you have fed the cable and USB plug through.
- Depending on the location of the humidifier, you may need a USB extension cable and a USB adapter for the power outlet.
- Place the ultrasonic nebulizer in the box and plug it into the power outlet.
- Fill it with water, close the lid, and your homemade humidifier is ready to use.
