With fuel prices high in Germany, many drivers who live near the border are wondering whether it’s worth filling up in Luxembourg.
Is it worth filling up in Luxembourg? Not as much as it used to be
There was a time when gasoline and diesel were significantly cheaper in Luxembourg than in Germany. At times, the price difference was over 70 cents per liter. This was particularly worthwhile for those who live near the German-Luxembourg border. In the meantime, fuel prices in Germany and Luxembourg have converged (as of September 2023).
- In Luxembourg, the price per liter for premium unleaded (95 octane) is around 1.64 euros. In Germany, the price is around 1.88 euros, which is more than 20 cents higher. If you fill up with 50 liters of gasoline, you would pay around €82 in Luxembourg and around €94 in Germany. That’s a difference of €12.
- Super unleaded Plus costs around €1.88 in Luxembourg, while drivers in Germany have to pay at least €1.95 per liter. Based on our 50 liters, that’s around €94 for a tank of gas in Luxembourg and €97 for filling up in Germany. The savings are lower here.
- If you drive a diesel car, you can fill up for around €1.69 per liter in Luxembourg and €1.72 in Germany. For 50 liters, you pay around €85 in one case and €86 in the other. The savings are lowest here.
- Conclusion: Currently, you can expect maximum savings of 13 to 15 percent. This is particularly worthwhile if you fill up with premium unleaded. With Super Plus and diesel, however, the savings are so small that it is hardly worth the trip – unless you live right next to the border and the Luxembourg gas station is within sight.
