Sink plug won’t come up – what to do?

by Corinna

Have you accidentally pushed the sink plug in too hard and now it won’t come up? A bent rod can also prevent the plug from moving. In this home tip, we’ll show you 3 tricks you can use to unclog the drain.

Trick 1: Loosen the sink plug with tape

If there is still water in the sink, scoop it out first. Then wipe the sink dry. The plug must no longer be wet. Now proceed as follows:

  1. Take some strong parcel tape and stick it in the middle of the plug.
  2. It is better not to use duct tape, as this often leaves unsightly residue.
  3. Now lift the tape slightly on the right and left to create a kind of handle.
  4. Now pull firmly on the tape. The sink plug should now come loose.

Trick 2: Suck the sink plug out with a vacuum cleaner

If this method does not work, try pulling out the plug with a powerful vacuum cleaner.

  1. Take the vacuum cleaner hose and place it as centrally as possible on the plug.
  2. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and wait a few seconds until negative pressure has built up.
  3. Then pull the tube and plug upwards.

Trick 3: Push up the sink plug from below

However, if the plug is stuck or the rod is bent, you will need to go under the sink.

  1. There you will see the rod that is responsible for raising and lowering the plug. This is attached to the pipe with a cap nut.
  2. Unscrew this nut.
  3. Now you can turn the rod to the side and remove it.
  4. Take a long, thin object. This could be a screwdriver or an Allen key, for example.
  5. Insert it into the opening and move it back and forth until you find the sink plug.
  6. Now you can push the plug out upwards.
  7. Reinsert the rod and tighten the nut.
  8. However, if you see that a part is bent or broken, purchase a new rod from a specialist retailer.
