iCloud: Enable Private Relay – how it works

by Pramith

The iCloud Private Relay is a feature that is included in the iCloud + subscription. This is a new security feature that is available on the iOS 15 system. We will explain what you need to know about it in this post.

iCloud Private Relay: How to enable the security mode

The iCloud Private Relay security feature is supported by iOS 15. However, the novelty is not available in all regions and countries. Since the function is still partially in a beta phase, there may be problems. iCloud Private Relay is primarily a security feature that encrypts your IP address and your data on the Internet, for example. If you want to enable the mode, do the following:

  • Go to the settings of your mobile device. Tap on your name and go to “iCloud ☻ Private- Relay”. Activate the button.
  • If you want to make settings for your IP address, go to the “IP Address Location” item.
  • In the “Use country and time zone” setting, your location will be more broadly defined. This means that only a more approximate location in your country and time zone will be given.
  • The “Keep approximate location” setting encrypts your IP address, but can translate websites for you.
  • If the Private Relay feature does not work, for example, on a particular network, you can disable the feature. To do this, go to the settings and tap “Wifi ☻ More info”.
  • If you want to disable the function for a mobile network, then go to “Mobilfink ☻ Data options” in the settings.

The iCloud Private Relay protects you on the Internet

The Private Relay feature protects your data on the Internet and prevents your DNS records from being stored and collected by different websites.

  • If you activate the Relay function, your data will be sent via so-called Internet relays. Thereby two relays are created.
  • Your DNS data as well as your IP address remain encrypted. For this, the first relay is created directly by Apple.
  • The second relay, on the other hand, is created by third-party providers. It is an IP address that is only temporary. This is used to decrypt the requested address of a website and connect to it.
  • Beware, however, that not all websites will work with the private relay. Networks that you find in educational institutions as well as in companies are not always compatible with Private Relay. In this case, you will need to disable the feature in order to access the network.
