Many users want to delete Meta AI from WhatsApp, but it is not currently possible to remove the feature entirely. However, there are ways to minimize Meta AI.
Delete Meta AI from WhatsApp: Is that even possible?
First, the bad news: It is currently not possible to completely deactivate Meta AI. However, there are a few tricks you can use to at least banish the AI assistant from your chat list:
- Archive chat: Swipe the Meta AI chat in your chat list to the left and tap “Archive.” This will move the chat to your archived chats and it will no longer be directly visible.
- Delete chat: Swipe left on the Meta AI chat in your chat list and tap “More” (on Android) or “Delete” (on iOS). Confirm your selection to remove the chat completely from your WhatsApp chat list.
- It is important to understand that deleting or archiving the Meta AI chat does not completely remove or disable the feature from WhatsApp. These actions only hide the chat from your direct view.
What is Meta AI and what can it do?
Meta AI, Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant, is now integrated into WhatsApp and offers a variety of features. Here are the most important aspects in detailed sentences:

Mute WhatsApp AI: How to disable the AI
Sometimes, however, Meta AI is simply in the way, which is why it would be useful to be able to hide it. This is also possible by deleting the chat with the AI as described above or by muting Meta AI. This way, Meta AI will not disturb you and you will prevent the AI from becoming active in WhatsApp group chats.
- To do this, open WhatsApp and tap the colorful or blue circle in the chat overview to open the Meta AI chat.
- Tap the name “Meta AI” or the profile picture at the top of the chat.
- Select the “Mute” option. It will then say that other members cannot see that you have muted the chat. You can select a time frame for the mute. You can choose between eight hours, one week, or – ideally – “Always.”
- You will no longer receive notifications from WhatsApp AI, but the icon will remain visible. If the AI is added to a group chat, it will also remain muted for you.
Delete Meta AI from group chat – new feature
In April 2025, Meta introduced a new feature called “Advanced Chat Privacy” in WhatsApp. Starting in July 2025, there will be a switch in every private and group chat that is disabled by default. When enabled, no chat participant can call Meta AI by mentioning “@”; this prevents the AI from participating in or reading chat messages.
- In group chats, every member – regardless of their admin status – can activate or deactivate the privacy switch. Once the feature is activated, everyone else will see a notification in the chat. Activating the feature does not make the entire chat completely secure from eavesdropping, but it does at least technically prevent content from being passed on to Meta AI for analysis.
- If you want more privacy, you can use this switch to at least keep Meta AI out of your own chats. However, there is still no complete protection or option to completely disable Meta AI.
