If you want to register for Facebook, it only takes a few minutes. You can register on your PC or in the smartphone app. However, you should be careful with your data.
Registering for Facebook: Instructions
To open a new account on the social media platform Facebook, you need to register again. To do this, you will need to provide some information about yourself. Proceed as follows:
- Open the Facebook registration page or download the Facebook app. Then click on “Create new account.”
- Enter your details here, such as your name, gender, date of birth, email address, and a password. Alternatively, you can use your mobile phone number instead of your email address, but we recommend the latter. After all, your phone number is highly sensitive information.
- Then click on “Register.” You will then need to confirm your phone number or email address. You will receive the corresponding code via text message or email. Check your spam folder if necessary.
- You can then log in to your profile and complete it with pictures and status updates so that people will visit it.
- If a profile has already been created with your phone number or email address, you should contact support.
Protect your Facebook account: Here’s what you can do
To prevent unauthorized access to your Facebook account, you should take security measures wherever possible. Here’s what you can do:
- Create a strong password: Use at least twelve characters, including letters, numbers, and special characters, to create a secure password. Also, use a different password than you use on other platforms.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): Activate 2FA under “Settings ☻ Security and Login.” Select an authenticator app or one-time codes via SMS as a second layer of protection. Once activated, you will need an additional code in addition to your password each time you log in. This makes logging in a little more complicated, but it provides double protection for your account.
- Avoiding fraud and phishing: Facebook will never ask you for your password via email or message. So never give it out. Also, don’t click on suspicious links and report any unsafe activity immediately. Check your stored email addresses and phone numbers regularly to make sure no one has secretly changed them.
Facebook: Data protection problem due to AI?
Since June 2025, Facebook has been using a lot of your data for AI training. However, you can actively decide whether you want to allow this, and it was even possible to object to the use of AI. The priority should always be to protect your data from Facebook as much as possible.
- Facebook can use almost all of your activities, such as posts, photos, and comments, for AI purposes. According to Meta, private messages are excluded, but the definition is unclear.
- If you do not want this, use the opt-out option in the settings after logging in. This is the only way to effectively object. Chain letters are useless, as the consumer center also points out.
- You should also check your visibility and searchability settings, as well as your contact options in the privacy settings. You can also disable personalized advertising.
