Sometimes you see a butterfly in your garden and want to know what species it is. In this article, we’ll show you three handy apps that make it easy to identify the species and get more information.
Butterfly season: Identify species with the help of this app
The Butterfly Season app was created by the NABU regional association in North Rhine-Westphalia. It helps you identify the butterflies you are looking for.
- The app currently has information on over 50 butterflies and 25 plant species.
- Under “Species Portraits,” you can view all species or search directly for a specific butterfly genus.
- The particularly practical feature of this app is the Identify function. Here you can enter all the characteristics of the butterfly you don’t know and find out more quickly what species it is.
- You even have the option of creating your own field book. Here you can record your observations and easily keep track of them.
- You can download the app for free.
Butterflies of Germany – identifying butterfly species
The Butterflies of Germany app is a little more modest in design, but it can also be used to identify butterflies.
- The app was created as a means of analyzing the endangerment of butterflies in Germany.
- The app contains a list of all butterfly species found in Germany and lots of useful information.
- Under “Report find,” you can notify the app operators that you have encountered a species of butterfly and where exactly it was. This allows Germany’s species to be constantly monitored.
- At the bottom of each profile is a link titled: “More in the Lepiforum.” If you follow this link, you will be taken to the wiki page for that butterfly species, where you can find much more information.
- The app is also available for free download from the App Store.
- With this app, you may have to search the list for a short time to find the right butterfly, but it still serves its purpose.
Picture Insect – Identify butterflies with just a photo
The Picture Insect app has a very clever photo feature that will help you identify butterfly species.
- With the Picture Insect app, you can identify over 4,000 insect species, including butterflies, of course.
- The special feature of this app is its photo function. Instead of searching for a long time, you can simply take a photo of the insect. The species will then be professionally identified. This even works with a photo taken previously from your gallery.
- The app can be used worldwide. It is also designed to identify pests, giving you extra protection.
- You can also contact an expert directly. This will give you much more information about the species you have found.
- The app is only free for seven days. After that, there is an annual fee of €29.99. It can also be used by Apple users.
- Compared to the other two apps presented, the Picture Insect app is several classes better. However, it can do so much more that it is sometimes perhaps even too pompous for simple butterfly identification.
