15
Very few people know the meaning of the number 13. In various cultures, it is considered both a lucky number and an unlucky number.
This is the meaning behind the number 13
Many numbers have different meanings. This includes the number 13. It has long been considered an unlucky number and is therefore often avoided. However, many people believe that the number 13 is a lucky number.
- The idea that the number 13 brings bad luck is widespread in many different cultures. It probably originated in Catholic areas and can be traced back to the story of the Last Supper. At this supper, the apostle Judas Iscariot was the 13th man in the group, who subsequently betrayed Jesus.
- In addition, the number 13 also has many other ominous meanings in other cultures. In Islam and Sufism, for example, the number 13 is seen as a sign of impending doom.
- The fear of the number 13 as an omen of bad luck is known today as “triskaidekaphobia.” People who suffer from this phobia avoid the number 13 in their everyday lives.
- The superstition that the number 13 brings bad luck is also easy to notice in everyday life. For example, in many buildings, the 13th floor is not listed in elevators, in passenger aircraft, the numbering of the 13th row of seats is omitted, and in the German Social Security Code, the 13th book is not named.
The number 13 as a lucky number
However, the number 13 can also have another meaning. Many people attribute a positive effect to the number and consider 13 to be their personal lucky number.
- The number 13 can also represent the beginning of something new. This is because the number 12 represents the end of an old cycle. The number 13 therefore signifies that a new cycle is about to begin.
- In Jewish culture, for example, the number 13 is associated with the Bar Mitzvah ritual. This tradition represents the religious coming of age of a Jewish boy. In Judaism, a boy’s 13th birthday marks the transition to adulthood and is therefore considered a positive event.
- But other people and cultures also adopt the number 13 as their personal lucky number. The world-famous Taylor Swift regularly describes how the number 13 runs through her entire life and is therefore her lucky number.
