A cigarette lighter is installed in practically every car and also serves as a power source for navigation systems and other devices. If the socket is not working, there could be various reasons for this. We have summarized these in our home article.
Cigarette lighter not working – check the fuse
- Like many other electrical components in your car, the cigarette lighter also has a fuse. This is the first thing you should check. Many fuses break after several years of use and need to be replaced. However, replacing them is quick and easy and can be done by yourself.
- You can find out where the fuse is located in your vehicle by consulting the owner’s manual. Once you have found the fuse, you should install a new one. The old one will serve as a model when you buy a new one. Since a fuse only costs one or two euros, this is the first step you should take.
Cigarette lighter not working – replace the button
- If the fuse was not the cause of the defect, the button itself may be the cause. You can replace it in all vehicles with an original button from the manufacturer without hesitation. Depending on the model, the cost is around 20 euros.
- Note: Before you buy a button, you should check the actual socket. You can do this by plugging in a charging cable for the navigation system and checking whether it is charging. If this is the case, then the problem is with the button and it needs to be replaced. If the navigation system is not charging, the button is functional and does not need to be replaced. In this case, there is another reason for the problem.
Cigarette lighter not working – have the socket replaced
- If you have ruled out both factors as the cause of the defect, the lighter socket itself is likely to be defective. However, this is relatively rare and should therefore be checked at a specialist workshop before you buy a new socket.
- If the socket is defective, the only option is to replace it. You should always have this checked at a repair shop, as not all sockets are connected in the same way. If you have little experience with electronic devices, it is better to have the repair carried out by a mechanic. The cost is around $50 to $100, depending on the model.
