If you have lost the oil cap from your car, this can quickly lead to damage to the engine. We show you how to act correctly in this situation.
Losing the oil cap from your car: getting a replacement
- In the best case scenario, leave the car and get a new oil cap. These are available to order from any garage. Alternatively, you can order an oil cap from Amazon or try your luck at the nearest scrap yard.
- If you cannot do without your car at the moment, you must temporarily close the opening of the oil tank. Otherwise, the oil will leak out while you are driving, contaminating the engine compartment and, in the worst case, causing damage to the engine.
- Amateurs should not attempt this, however. Professionals can seal the hole with a sock, for example. However, it is important that the hole is as tight as possible and that the sock is prevented from slipping into the tank by a wire or other securing device.
- Tip: Take another close look in the engine compartment to see if the oil cap is still there.
If you decide to continue driving, always have a few liters of engine oil with you.
