Preparing flaxseed: Use in the kitchen

 To give your health a boost, you can add flaxseed to practically any meal.

  • Use 2 tablespoons per serving. This amount will not change the taste of your food.
  • You can also use flaxseed to bake bread. Any bread recipe is suitable for this. Simply add 1/4 cup of flaxseed to the mixture.
  • If you like smoothies, add 1 tablespoon per glass to increase your fiber intake.
  • Sprinkle the seeds over your salad to give it a nutty flavor.
  • Use flaxseed as a substitute for eggs. To do this, mix 1 tablespoon of the seeds with 3 tablespoons of water. However, please note that the result may vary depending on the recipe and adjustments may be necessary.

Flaxseed: The health benefits

 Flaxseed has many health benefits:

  • Flaxseed has a high swelling capacity and therefore keeps you feeling full for a long time. However, always make sure you drink enough fluids.
  • The seeds promote digestion and help with constipation.
  • Flaxseed can lower your cholesterol levels.
  • Flaxseed has an anti-inflammatory effect on skin problems.
  • Flaxseed contains a lot of fiber, which is said to help prevent breast and colon cancer.
  • Flaxseed can be used whole or ground. Ground seeds do not keep as long, but are easier for the body to digest and absorb. This allows the omega-3 fatty acids to have an even more intense effect.
  • Use flaxseed in moderation, as 100 g contains an impressive 360 kcal. A daily healthy intake is considered to be 20-30 g.
  • Due to their high omega-3 fatty acid content, flax seeds can quickly become rancid. Therefore, store them in a cool, dark place to extend their shelf life.

Flaxseed: Use for health problems

The seeds can also help with health problems.

  • Flaxseed tea helps with hoarseness. Pour 250 ml of water over 2 teaspoons of whole seeds and let the flaxseeds soak for 20 minutes.

    Stir occasionally. Pour the mixture through a sieve and then heat the tea.

  • If you have gastrointestinal complaints, soak 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed in 250 ml of cold water in the evening. In the morning, briefly boil the resulting paste. Pour the warm mixture onto a gauze cloth and squeeze out the mucilage. It is best to pour this into a thermos flask and drink it lukewarm several times a day in small sips.
  • For skin problems, take 1 tablespoon of flaxseed and pour hot water over the seeds. Leave the mixture to soak for 10-20 minutes until it reaches a comfortable temperature. Apply the mask to your cleansed face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash the mask off thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  • To treat constipation, you do not need to soak the seeds. Add 2 teaspoons of whole, unground seeds to at least 150 ml of water and drink the mixture. The effect will take two to three days to kick in. Drink at least 1.5 liters of fluid per day to get your digestion going.
