What are pearl barley made of? Simply explained

by Johannes

Many people wonder what pearl barley is made of. They are barley or wheat grains that have been hulled and then polished

Barley: what the food is made of

Barley is an easily digestible food that is often served with stews, soups and salads as a side dish.

  • Barley is traditionally made from grains of cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare). There are also variants made from wheat (Triticum).
  • The grains are completely hulled. They are then polished until the grain is completely smooth. For this reason, rolled barley often resembles tiny bread rolls
  • When the grains are split before polishing, pearl barley is produced. This variation is much finer and resembles tiny pearls. Depending on the product, the bodies are split two to four times
  • For this reason, pearl barley is available in five different gradations from extra fine to extra coarse. They are available in the following shapes: Round A pearl barley, semicircular B pearl barley and oval-elongated C pearl barley.
