You can tell when mushrooms are bad by a few characteristics. You should look out for these when you go shopping.
When mushrooms are bad
A fresh and good mushroom can be recognized by its firm consistency, light brown plates, earthy smell and closed cap. If the mushroom deviates from these characteristics, it is not always bad. Depending on the variety and degree of ripeness, the plates of fresh mushrooms can also be pink or dark brown in color. There is a transitional period during which you can still eat the mushroom. It is only bad if the following criteria are met:
- The mushroom is no longer firm, but soft and flabby. Note: This depends on how the mushrooms are stored. If you store the mushrooms in the fridge, they will soften more quickly, which does not immediately mean that they are bad.
- He smells rotten.
- When you pick up the mushroom, you will feel that the surface is greasy

- The surface has darkened and has spots and dark brown or even black spots.
Distinguishing between mycelium and mold
Mushrooms do not always have the above-mentioned characteristics. They can also be covered with a white layer that looks like fluff.
- In this case, it is mycelium. You can eat it without hesitation or carefully rub it off with a kitchen towel;
- Mold on mushrooms appears black or greenish and not white. If you see and smell mold, you should always dispose of these mushrooms.
- If mold is visible, dispose of the entire mushroom, as mold spores can spread inside.
