Connecting JBL speakers – here’s how

by Tobias

If you want to pair JBL Bluetooth speakers with each other, there are two easy ways to do so.

Pair JBL speakers at the touch of a button in Party Mode

You can connect multiple JBL Bluetooth speakers such as JBL Flip, Charge, or JBL Xtreme to each other and play your favorite music from multiple speakers. Make sure that all speakers use the same pairing function (Connect, Connect+, or PartyBoost); different generations – such as PartyBoost models with Connect(+) devices – cannot be connected to each other.

  • For pairing to work, one of the JBL speakers must be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth. So turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and then press the power button on the JBL speaker.

  • Your mobile phone should recognize the speaker as an available device and connect to it via Bluetooth.

  • Next, turn on the second JBL Bluetooth speaker you want to pair with the first one. Now press the Connect button on both speakers. After a short time, the two speakers will be paired. In Party Mode, different speaker models can play together as long as they have the same pairing function.

Pair JBL speakers via the app for stereo playback

If you pair the Bluetooth speakers with each other as described in the first section, the sound will be amplified. Pair the devices with the JBL Connect app to enjoy full stereo sound. However, true stereo mode only works with two identical speaker models; if the models are different, the app will automatically switch to Party Mode.

  • Download the JBL Connect app for iOS or Android, turn on one of the JBL speakers, launch the app, and select your speaker model.

  • Now turn on the second Bluetooth speaker you want to pair.

  • It will take a while for it to appear on the display of your iPhone or Android device. Once the app has found the speaker, it will appear next to the image of the first speaker.

  • Once this is done, tap the stereo playback button on your screen. You can also use the app to switch channels or switch back to party mode if desired.

  • Note: The latest JBL Portable app is required for pairing, switching between party and stereo mode, and firmware updates.

Which JBL speakers can be paired

Not all models can be connected to each other. Pairing is possible with the following speakers:

  • Models with JBL Connect+ function: JBL Xtreme 2, JBL Pulse 3, JBL Charge 4, JBL Boombox.

  • Models with JBL PartyBoost function: JBL Flip 5, JBL Pulse 4, JBL Xtreme 3, JBL Boombox 2, JBL Charge 5.

  • Models from the PartyBoost series are not compatible with speakers from the Connect or Connect+ generation, and vice versa.

  • JBL now also supports Auracast – if both speakers are Auracast-enabled, even more devices can be paired simultaneously.

  • The PartyBox series uses TWS (True Wireless Stereo) mode, which only works with two identical PartyBox models.
