You should learn to save if you don’t want to be staring at an empty bank account at the end of the month. That’s easier said than done. But if you follow our advice and tricks, you too can manage to put a few euros aside.
Learn to save with these tips
Coffee dates, eating out, shopping for clothes, and partying on the weekend—at the beginning of the month, our bank accounts are full, but after a few days, much of that money has already been spent. If you want to change this, you can do so by following our advice. Because saving can be learned.
- Set aside money: Depending on your income, you should always set aside a small amount. Start with small amounts of money that you put in a piggy bank. It is important that you do this regularly and right at the beginning of the month, otherwise you will have nothing left at the end of the month or you will spend it.
- Set goals: Set yourself a goal or a wish that is worth saving for. Are you planning a big trip or buying a car in the near future? Once you have this in mind, your motivation to save will increase.
- Two accounts: A very simple tip for saving is to set up two accounts. Use your free checking account for all your sources of income and running costs. Then open another account to which you can transfer your savings. It will quickly become a habit to transfer money to this account.
- Saving in everyday life: Saving in everyday life does not mean that you always have to go without everything. But with just a few tricks, you can have a few extra euros in your wallet. For example, buy your clothes on second-hand platforms on the internet, browse the nearest flea market in your city, or stay active on giveaway exchanges.
- Reward yourself: Even though you shouldn’t lose sight of your goal to save money, you can still reward yourself from time to time. If you’ve cooked all week instead of eating out, why not visit your favorite restaurant again? Don’t give up all fun, as this will increase your stamina.
More tips
Putting money aside isn’t always easy. It’s hard to save when your monthly expenses like rent, utilities, and groceries are really high. If you don’t have a steady income that covers all your costs, saving can be tough.
- If you still want to earn more money, there are numerous ways to do so. Simply download one or more flea market apps and you can sell unused items easily and conveniently from home. Vinted and eBay Classifieds are particularly popular for this.
- Healthy and varied food is expensive. Don’t hesitate to reach for products on the shelf that are close to their expiration date. They are often available for less than half the price. Another tip is to use the “toogoodtogo” app, which allows you to purchase leftover stock for a small amount.
- As a pupil, student, or pensioner, you can benefit from numerous discounts and deals. Try to take advantage of these. Whether it’s a lot or just a few euros, always take your student or pensioner ID with you.
- You can also save money on your daily coffee. Avoid coffee shops. The coffee specialties there are delicious, but completely overpriced. Make your own coffee and take it with you in a to-go cup. Coffee is sometimes on sale in many supermarkets. Keep an eye out for these offers.
