Placing your mattress on the floor is not only a current interior design trend, but also a viable sleeping option. If you keep a few points in mind, you can sleep on the floor without any problems.
Mattress on the floor: What you need to know
If you want to place your mattress directly on the floor instead of using a bed, this is entirely possible and not necessarily harmful to your back. The problem is rather the lack of ventilation for the mattress.
- If your mattress is on the floor, there can be no air circulation. However, this is important because the human body sweats up to half a liter of water at night.
- Without a slatted frame, sweat penetrates the mattress and remains there because there is insufficient ventilation. This can very quickly lead to mold growth, which is neither good for the mattress nor for your health.
- Mites and bacteria also find it easy to nestle in your mattress if the climate is constantly humid.
How to use the mattress on the floor without any problems
If you have a thick mattress and prefer a firm sleeping surface, you can sleep on the floor without any problems. If you also ensure adequate ventilation, there is no reason not to use your mattress on the floor. Please note the following points:
- Ventilate your mattress at regular intervals by leaning it against the wall with the underside facing forward. This allows any moisture to escape.
- Turn back the duvet every day so that moisture can escape upwards.
- Also, turn the mattress every few weeks so that you lie on all areas. Turning the mattress also ensures that bacteria and other microorganisms do not accumulate.
- Vacuum under the mattress and the mattress itself every week. If the mattress is in direct contact with the floor, dust, hair, and dirt particles will quickly accumulate there, which can be particularly problematic for allergy sufferers.
- Clean your mattress thoroughly at regular intervals—preferably with a steam cleaner or special cleaning agents for upholstered furniture.
- Especially in apartments with unheated floors or poor insulation, it can be uncomfortably cold near the floor. This not only affects sleeping comfort, but also the moisture regulation of the mattress. Place an insulating pad under the mattress to block the cold.
Alternatives without a bed
If you want to do without a bed in your bedroom but still don’t want to put the mattress directly on the floor, there are various options available.
- Pallets: Build yourself a bed out of pallets. This can be done without much effort. Alternatively, you can buy a ready-made pallet bed. This means you don’t need a slatted frame, but you’re still not lying directly on the floor.
- Corrugated cardboard: Another option is to buy a bed made of corrugated cardboard. You don’t need a slatted frame for this, but the mattress is still not lying directly on the floor.
- Slatted frame: You can also simply lay the slatted frame on the floor and place the mattress on top of it. This provides the necessary ventilation from below and does not involve any significant costs.
