Moths in your home: What you can do

by Estelle

Moths in your home can be a nuisance. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get rid of these uninvited guests.

Catching moths in your home: How to do it

If you spot a moth in your home, you should try to catch it and then release it outside. These creatures feel more comfortable in nature than indoors.

  • Moths are attracted to bright light. So if you notice a moth in your home, it is best to turn off the lights and only turn on a flashlight, directing the beam of light onto a flat surface.
  • The moth will then usually fly to this light source and hopefully settle down on the illuminated surface.
  • In addition to the flashlight, you should also arm yourself with a transparent glass. Place this over the moth. Once you have done this, you can turn the light back on.
  • Now carefully slide a piece of paper under the glass. Be careful not to hurt the moth and make sure it cannot escape from the glass.
  • Now you can take the glass and paper to an open window and release the moth outside. Close your windows immediately so that the moth does not fly straight back into your living space.
  • You can also do something similar by leaving only your laptop screen on and waiting until the moth settles on its surface in the darkness.

Moths: Interesting facts about these creatures that love light

Moths are butterflies that do not belong to the diurnal butterfly family. This means that they are not moths, as they are often mistakenly called.

    • Moths live for up to several weeks—even in homes. They often nest in corners of walls and reproduce there.
    • These insects have a very fragile anatomy. Their feet and wings are very delicate. It is therefore important to remove moths from your home as quickly as possible. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will overlook and injure them.
