Removing hair from drains is an unpleasant, even disgusting, task. However, to prevent drains and siphons from becoming completely blocked, it is necessary to remove the hairballs. There are various methods for doing this.
Removing hair from drains with baking soda and vinegar
Women know all too well: hair clogs the drains in showers, bathtubs, and sinks. To prevent the pipe from becoming completely clogged, the hair must be removed as quickly as possible.
- Removing hair from the drain works with a tried and tested home remedy: baking soda and vinegar. Pour three tablespoons of baking soda and half a cup of vinegar essence into the clogged drain. It will start to bubble vigorously in the siphon.
- When the bubbling has subsided, pour boiling water over it. The hairball should then dissolve and the drain will be clear again.
- For severe blockages, you can use a chemical drain or pipe cleaner. However, this should only be used if home remedies no longer help. The reason: if the powder from the cleaner is not completely washed away, it will harden and can make the blockage even worse.
A drain strainer can prevent pipe blockages
You can also remove hair from the drain “mechanically.” Among other things, the good old plunger, which works with pressure, can help.
- Another alternative is a pipe cleaning spiral, which you can use to fish out hair from the drain. However, you should proceed with caution when using the latter so that you do not damage the pipes from the inside.
- Important: Take precautions to prevent hair from getting into the drain in the first place. Brush your hair over the sink before showering and collect the dry hair immediately.
- You should also always use a drain strainer in the shower and bathtub to catch the hair. Make sure that the strainer completely covers the drain and remove the collected hair immediately after showering.
