Running the washing machine empty: how useful is it?

by Michaela

Is it useful to run a washing machine empty to reduce the number of germs in it? We have the answer for you in this article.

Running the washing machine empty – useful or not?

In most cases, running the washing machine empty is not necessary to prevent the spread of germs. Take the following measures to keep your washing machine and laundry as germ-free as possible:

  • Germs like a neutral pH value. Use detergent to raise the pH value to around 10. This alkaline solution, also known as a base, inhibits the growth of many germs.
  • Some detergents, especially wool detergents, have a significantly lower pH value. This also reduces the growth of germs.
  • The interplay of acidic and alkaline conditions in particular is a real test of endurance for germs. If you have few woolen garments and therefore no wool detergent, you can use vinegar to remove washing powder residue, gray haze, and sweat odors from your clothes.
  • Start wash cycles at 60 to 95 degrees from time to time to reduce germ formation. If you do not wash for a long time, for example in a vacation apartment, it is best to drain the water beforehand.
  • Leave wet laundry in the machine for as short a time as possible after the wash cycle.
  • To remove the rough, fuzzy film from the porthole of your machine, wipe it away with a damp sponge.
  • Some washing machines have an environmentally friendly self-cleaning program.
