Baking soda helps against ants in your home, on your patio, or on your balcony. If you want to use baking soda as a poison, there’s not much you need to bear in mind.
Using baking soda against ants
Ants are useful insects, and the species native to Germany are not dangerous to humans. Nevertheless, ants are unwelcome in the home.
- People often suggest putting out baking powder. This has to contain sodium bicarbonate for the ants to react to it. To be on the safe side, it’s best to use pure baking soda.
- Baking soda is poisonous to ants because it destroys their acid-base balance. Therefore, you will need to use bait to get the uninvited insect guests to eat the baking soda. For example, mix sugar into the baking soda.
- Place the baking soda where the ants enter your home or where they travel.
- The ants will not only eat the baking soda on the spot, but will also carry some of it back to their nest.
Effects of baking soda and alternatives
- There is not much to consider when using baking soda. Spread it in small amounts in different places. This will prevent pets, for example, from getting to the baking soda.
- Baking soda is not poisonous, but is used as a household remedy. If your pet licks a little baking soda, nothing will happen to it. However, if it consumes large amounts, you should contact a veterinarian.
- Baking soda will not harm your garden if the ants carry it outside. You can also use baking soda in the garden to combat pests such as lice.
- As an alternative to baking soda, you can also use vinegar and spray it on the ants. If you cannot control the ant infestation with home remedies, you can also use ant poison. Always make sure you use it correctly.
Prevention against ants
There are a few preventive measures you can take to avoid having to deal with ants in the first place:
- You can easily ensure that ants are not attracted to your home. Sugary and starchy foods are ants’ favorite foods. Therefore, make sure that your home is always clean and that no leftovers are left behind.
- Certain smells, such as cloves or tea tree oil, can deter ants. However, if the ants are already too far along for this strategy, the only thing that will help is to fight them.
- Locate the anthill. Once you have found it, you can carefully move it, for example to a nearby forest.
