If you want to make your network’s Wi-Fi SSID visible, other PCs in the vicinity of your router will be able to detect your wireless network.
Making your Wi-Fi SSID visible using the router software: Instructions
You can make hidden SSIDs visible again via the router settings.
- Log in to your router’s administration menu. To do this, first open a browser of your choice and then enter the router abbreviation or the default URL.
- Typical router abbreviations are fritz.box, easy.box, speedport.ip, or o2.box. The most common URLs include the IP addresses 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, or 192.168.178.1.
- Since these can vary greatly from router to router, it is also possible to find out the URL via the Windows command prompt. Open the command prompt using the key combination [Windows] + [R].
- Enter ipconfig and look for the entry Default Gateway. The number behind it is the URL you are looking for. Enter this URL in your browser and then log in with your router password.
- Depending on your router, you will find the necessary options to display the SSID in the security settings. Here, for example, you can disable the SSID invisible function or similar so that your Wi-Fi SSID is visible on the network.
Making the Wi-Fi SSID visible: Other methods
If you do not have access to your router settings, there is no need to worry. There are other ways to find out the SSID.
- If you have never changed your network name, check the sticker on your router. The original name is located directly next to or above the router password and you can simply copy it.
- Simply click on the active Wi-Fi connection. As long as you are connected, the network name will be displayed.
- Alternatively, you can use suitable software to display hidden SSIDs. These include NetStumbler, InSSIDer, and Kismet. These are known as sniffers.
