It only takes a few steps to save a link to your desktop. You can either create a bookmark or save the entire website directly.
How to save a link to your desktop
Please note that the following steps refer to a system running Windows 10 Home.
- First, find the page you want to save as a shortcut on your desktop.
- Now select the entire URL of the page in the address bar. Then drag it to a free space on your desktop.
- You now have a shortcut that will take you to the linked page in your browser when you double-click on it.
- In Windows, you can also use the context menu: Right-click on the desktop, select “New” and then “Shortcut.” Enter the URL and confirm with “Finish.”
- On a Mac, simply drag the small icon to the left of the URL into the Finder or directly onto the desktop. The link appears as a .webloc file and opens automatically in the default browser.
Save entire website
Sometimes websites may be taken offline or undergo maintenance. To ensure that you still have access to the information you need, save the web pages in their entirety for future reference.
- Open the page you want to save.
- Right-click anywhere on the page and select “Save as…” or “Save page as…”.
- You will then be redirected to the save window. Here you can choose whether you want to save the entire website or just the HTML text.
- Select the location where you want to save the website. You can then access the website via the .html file.
How to organize your links effectively
In addition to simply saving links to your desktop, there are other ways to organize them effectively and keep them handy at all times. The following tips may help you:
- Create folders for different categories on your desktop. This allows you to clearly separate work links, personal favorites, and hobby sites.
- Use browser bookmarks synchronized with cloud services to access your saved links on the go. Many modern browsers such as Chrome or Firefox offer automatic synchronization.
- Combine links with notes using programs such as OneNote or Evernote. Save the link together with a short description or relevant information.
- Consider which links actually need to be on your desktop. A cluttered desktop is confusing and makes navigation difficult.
