Google Maps: No sound – this is how it works again

by Johannes

If you don’t hear any sound in Google Maps, this can have various reasons. Here you will find common causes for the problem and the corresponding solutions.

No sound in Google Maps: How to turn on sound

If you don’t hear sound during Google Maps announcements on your smartphone, tablet or in Android Auto, the sound is usually muted. To reactivate it, proceed as follows:

  • Open the Google Maps app on your device.
  • Start navigating to any destination.
  • Tap the speaker icon in the top right corner to view more options.
  • Now select the right loudspeaker icon with high volume. The left symbol mutes the navigation completely and the middle symbol makes announcements only in the event of warnings or changes to the route.

Other Possible Causes

If the speech output settings have not changed, there may be other causes for the problem.

  • Volume: Make sure that both your phone and the app settings are at full volume. These can be found under “Navigation Settings” in the Google Maps app.
  • Connected devices: If you have connected your smartphone to your car with headphones or via Bluetooth, the voice output may be disturbed. Make sure the input of your car radio is tuned to your smartphone.
  • Parallel music: If your car radio is playing music through your car’s antenna, there can be no voice output from the app. So you need to make sure that you only use your smartphone as a media source.
  • Faulty speakers: If you still don’t hear any sound without connected devices and at full volume, you should use another app to test the speakers. Alternatively, you can play a test tone in the Google Maps settings. If you don’t hear anything in either situation, it could be a smartphone problem.
  • USB Settings: If your smartphone is connected to your car radio via USB, you must set the data mode to “Media”. This way, the sound is also transmitted via USB.
  • Faulty cable: If you hear sound through your smartphone but not through your car speakers, you should test other cables. There could be a broken cable.
