Snapchat Memories Download: How to save your memories

by Tobias

Snapchat is introducing a paid subscription for Memories storage space, as the previously free storage space will be limited to 5 GB in the future. Find out what’s behind this change.

Snapchat: Download for Memories storage space

Users who want to store more than 5 GB of Snaps and videos must either take out a paid subscription or export their stored Memories to protect themselves from a download. Here’s how to export your Snapchat Memories:

  1. Open the menu via your Snapchat profile and go to Settings.
  2. Under Privacy or Account Settings, select the “My Data” function.
  3. Request and confirm the export of your data there.
  4. Snapchat will then send an email with a link to a ZIP file containing all your saved memories.

Presumed subscription models and prices

This change is intended to enable Snapchat to cover the rising infrastructure costs for storage while continuing to develop the service in a sustainable manner. Most users with less than 5 GB of storage space will not be affected. Those most affected are frequent photographers and power users with large Memories archives. This is what they can probably expect (as of 10/2025):

  • Free storage up to 5 GB.
  • 100 GB of storage for approximately $1.99 (approx. €1.85) per month as a basic subscription.
  • Snapchat+ subscription (approx. $3.99 per month) with 250 GB of storage.
  • Snapchat Platinum (Premium) subscription for $15.99 per month with up to 5 TB of storage space.
  • Existing users with more than 5 GB of storage space will be given a 12-month transition period before they must either subscribe or export their data.

How to selectively delete large or duplicate Memories

Large and duplicate Memories take up unnecessary storage space. To avoid paying for a subscription, delete them and free up more space.

    • To selectively delete large or duplicate Snapchat Memories, there is no automatic function in Snapchat itself that specifically recognizes duplicate or particularly large Memories. However, you can proceed as described below. The combination of manual deletion in Snapchat and an external file manager with a duplicate finder is recommended to specifically remove large and duplicate Memories and save storage space.
    • Selectively deleting large or duplicate Memories in Snapchat: Open Memories by swiping up on the camera screen. Long press on individual snaps or videos and tap “Delete.” Larger files must be identified manually by viewing the respective storage size or by viewing them. To find and delete duplicate files, you can manually review Memories and remove duplicate photos or videos.
    • External tools and procedures for duplicate files: Snapchat itself does not offer a feature for automatically searching for and deleting duplicates. Photos and videos can be exported from Snapchat as files. You can then use external tools for duplicate files (e.g., “Files by Google” for Android, Duplicate File Finder for Windows) on your PC or smartphone to identify and delete the duplicate files. Programs that check files for identical file sizes, metadata, and image similarities can help with this.
    • Tips: Regularly check your saved Memories manually for size and duplicates. Export your Memories to external storage and use duplicate finder software for a thorough clean-up. Delete duplicate snaps, especially when storage space is running low or when paid storage subscriptions are introduced. Also, clear the cache on Snapchat to save storage space.
