Vodafone: How to activate your SIM card

by Pramith

If you want to activate your new SIM card from Vodafone, you don’t have to do it by phone. There are several ways to get your SIM card up and running quickly and easily.

Activate your Vodafone SIM card: Your options

If you have a new contract, your SIM card is already activated. If you have extended your contract and received a new SIM card, proceed as follows:

  • By phone: Call the free hotline on 12 22 9 using your old SIM card. Your SIM card will be activated immediately. It is important that you switch off your smartphone after activating the SIM card and then replace the old SIM card with the new one.
  • App: You can also activate the SIM card in the app. To do this, launch the My Vodafone app and go to “My contract” and then “SIM card.” Here you will find the option to activate the SIM card.
  • By the way: Customers can not only activate a new SIM card via the My Vodafone app, but also check the activation status and order a replacement card if necessary. The process is similar in the online customer portal, where eSIM profiles can also be downloaded directly. If you prefer to get help by phone, you can contact Vodafone customer service at 1212 (from the Vodafone network).
  • Online: Last but not least, you can also activate your SIM card online on the Vodafone website. Log in to “MyVodafone” with your login details. Then go to “SIM card” and select “Activate SIM card.”
  • Note: The old SIM card will be deactivated and can no longer be used. The new SIM card will be ready for use after about 20 minutes.

Activate SIM card depending on type

With a new contract, the SIM card is usually activated automatically as soon as the device or card is delivered and the network signal is available. If no connection is established, activation can be initiated manually using the methods mentioned above (app, online portal, or hotline).

    • Prepaid cards from Vodafone, on the other hand, must be registered before first use. This is required via the Vodafone website with proof of identity in accordance with §111 of the Telecommunications Act. After successful identity verification, activation usually takes place within 1 to 24 hours.
    • Replacement cards (e.g., in case of loss or defect) must always be activated manually. As long as the new card is not activated, the old card remains active. Once activated, the old card is permanently invalid.
    • Difference between eSIM and classic SIM card: The classic SIM card is a physical card that is inserted into the device. The eSIM, on the other hand, is digital and is loaded directly onto the smartphone or smartwatch.
    • Activation is done via a QR code or activation link from Vodafone. The functions and performance are the same, but the eSIM saves space and allows for faster switching between tariffs or devices.
