WhatsApp Web: How to insert a line break

by Pramith

You can quickly insert a line break in WhatsApp Web. However, you must not use the [Enter] key, as this will send your message.

Line breaks in WhatsApp Web

Once you have set up WhatsApp Web, you can use the messenger on your desktop as usual. If you want to send a message with a line break, you need to know the keyboard shortcut.

  1. Instead of the Enter key, use the keyboard shortcut [Shift] + [Enter].
  2. Once you have finished your message, you can send it by pressing the [Enter] key.
  3. If you find the [Shift] + [Enter] key combination too cumbersome, you can change this in the WhatsApp Web settings.
  4. To do this, open the settings via the gear icon at the bottom left and select “Chats.”
  5. Here, deactivate the “Enter = Send” option. You can then use the [Enter] key to create a line break.
  6. However, this option is only available in WhatsApp Web. It is not available in the desktop app for Windows and macOS. Here, line breaks can only be created using the keyboard shortcut mentioned above.

WhatsApp: Additional formatting options

Line breaks are useful because they allow you to maintain clarity even in longer messages.

  • To make your messages even clearer, you can use formatting to make your text or individual words bold, italic, or underlined.
  • To do this, write your message and then use the mouse to select the parts you want to format. A formatting menu will appear above your text, allowing you to write your text in bold, italics, or strikethrough.
  • If the field does not appear, you can also format your text using the text field. To write text in bold, place the text between asterisks, for example, “*Important*.” To italicize text, place underscores before and after the text, e.g., “_Please note_”. To strikethrough text, you can use the tilde. For example: “~Invalid~”.
  • You can also combine these formatting options and write your text in bold and italics at the same time, for example.
  • Formatting is possible in WhatsApp Web and in the desktop app. You can also create differently formatted text on your smartphone.
