Harvesting parsley – how to do it right

by Michaela

Parsley practically grows on its own, and you can harvest it in abundance. But don’t just grab a pair of scissors. We’ll show you how to harvest parsley without damaging the plant.

How to harvest parsley correctly

If you follow a few rules when harvesting parsley, the plant will thank you with an abundant supply:

  • Don’t just start cutting wildly. Wait until the stems have at least three pairs of leaves before harvesting.
  • Always harvest the parsley with the stems, not just the leaves. Cutting at the very bottom of the stem stimulates the growth of the plant and you will get a nice bushy herb.
  • Harvest the outer shoots first. This way, you cut the older stems first and the parsley can use more energy on the young shoots. It also prevents the leaves from turning brown.
  • Harvest regularly, even if you don’t have any use for the parsley at the moment. In this case, you can easily dry the herb.
  • Parsley grows outdoors until about late fall. So harvest in time to stock up. Before the greenery dies off, cut the rest as well. This will encourage the herb to grow vigorously again next year.
  • If you keep parsley indoors, you don’t need to stock up for the cold season: parsley grows all year round here.
