Removing cola stains – how to do it

If you’ve just decorated your white T-shirt with a big cola stain, first grab a paper towel or other absorbent material and place it on the stain. Don’t make the mistake of rubbing it wildly, as this will only rub the stain in further and spread it.

• As soon as possible, place the garment in warm water with detergent and let it soak well. If you have gall soap to hand, this would be just as good an option as baking powder or baking soda. After pre-treating the stain, put the garment straight into the washing machine.
• If you are out and about, first hold the stained fabric under warm running water. Then spread a little liquid soap on the cola stain and wait a moment before rinsing the soap off with cold water.
• Carbonated mineral water is also effective against cola stains. Dip the stained area into it.
• You can also use carbonated mineral water on stains on carpets or fabric upholstery. However, if cola has just been spilled, try to soak up as much of the liquid as possible with paper towels first. After you have softened the cola stain, sprinkle plenty of salt over it and leave it to work overnight. The salt will draw the liquid out of the fabric and you can then simply vacuum it up.
• Alternatively, cover the stain thoroughly with baking soda or baking powder.
• If the cola stain is still slightly visible after pre-treatment, dab it carefully with gall soap. Be sure to rub the stain inward and not make it bigger.
• Alternatively, apply some glass cleaner or shaving cream to the remaining stain. Let the product soak in for one to two hours and then wipe with clear water.
• In addition to home remedies, you can of course also use stain removers from specialist retailers.
• Tip: If the material is very delicate, it is best to consult an expert before cleaning. Alternatively, test the color fastness on an inconspicuous area.
