The cedilla, or “C with a hook,” is not actually used in our language. However, it is frequently used in French and Portuguese names and vocabulary. You can insert this special character in just a few steps.
C with a hook – how to write it
There are several ways to add a hook, or cedilla, to the letter C:
- The easiest way is to copy the C with a cedilla from us: Ç, ç. You can then insert it at the desired location.
- If your keyboard has a number pad, you can also insert the capital C with a hook in Windows using the key combinations [Alt] + [0] [1] [9] [9]. For the small C with a hook, press [Alt] + [0] [2] [3] [1].
- If you have a Mac, use the key combinations [Alt] + [c] and [Alt] + [Shift] + [c] for the small and large C with a hook. Depending on your Mac keyboard, the [Alt] key may also be labeled [Option].
- Of course, you can also find Ç and other letters with a cedilla in the Windows character map. To do this, search for “Character Map” in the Windows Start menu and click on the corresponding entry. To find the C with cedilla quickly, activate the advanced view by checking the box and enter the word “cedilla” in the “Search for:” field.
- Word also offers a direct way to insert special characters. To do this, click on the “Insert” tab, then ‘Symbol’ and “More symbols.” Under “Subset,” select “Latin-1 (Supplement)” and copy the cedilla into the text by selecting the letter and clicking “Insert.”
- Many programs also allow you to insert Unicode characters. The code for the capital Ç is U+00C7, and for the lowercase ç it is U+00E7. In Word, for example, enter the code and then press [Alt] + [X] to generate the character.
- On smartphones and tablets, simply press and hold the c key to display the cedilla as an option.
