Old-fashioned baby monitors can easily be replaced by free apps on your smartphone.
Free baby monitor apps: It’s that easy
Nowadays, you can save yourself the expense of buying an expensive baby monitor by using free apps. The principle behind these apps is always the same.
- You need at least two compatible devices. One device is placed next to the crib and sends information to the other, which the parents or babysitter keep with them.
- Each app has something unique to offer, but most of them provide both audio and video monitoring. Some even offer a night mode. Nevertheless, they cannot compete with the integrated night vision cameras in expensive baby monitors. However, the apps are often sufficient.
- Baby monitor apps are particularly very practical on vacation and are much more convenient than bulky devices. After all, you can take your cell phone with you wherever you go, and you often have an old device in a drawer somewhere.
1. Luna – Free baby monitor app for iOS
Luna is a promising iOS app and has a lot to offer. All you need are two Apple devices, for example an iPhone and an iPad.
- Luna is available to download for free from the Apple Store. Your devices need at least iOS 12.4 and a Wi-Fi connection to use it. However, many people also choose the premium version for €8, which allows them to use the app more extensively via 3G or LTE.
- Unlike other baby monitor apps, Luna also runs smoothly in the background and does not block your phone. If the connection is disrupted, the app notifies you immediately.
- Luna has an audio function that allows you to listen in on your child’s room from time to time or continuously. You will be notified immediately if your baby cries and can use the audio and video function to check on your child.
- According to the developer, Luna uses 4 times less battery power than other baby monitor apps. Since this is usually a big problem, this app is particularly recommended.
- You can view a list of how your baby slept and how long the last rest periods lasted. This can provide you with useful information as your child develops.
2. WIFI Baby Monitor – More than just a baby monitor
The WiFi Baby Monitor app is available for Android and offers a range of great features:
- In the free version, you can monitor your child via sound. The app sends you a notification if it gets noisy in the room where your baby is sleeping.
- The app’s additional features are particularly useful, including measuring the temperature and air quality in the room.
- If you want to use all the app’s features, including video monitoring, you will need the paid version.
3. Dormi – The popular baby monitor app for Android
Dormi is a very good option for Android devices and anyone who wants a free baby monitor replacement at short notice.
- Dormi is only available in the Google Play Store and can therefore only be used with Android devices. The developer promises that all devices running Android version 2.3 or higher can run the app.
- The best thing about the Dormi app is the feature that allows you to connect multiple devices in parent mode to the device in the nursery.
- You will be notified when your baby cries, but you can also listen and talk to your child at any time. The battery drain is not too high and the app continues to run in the background.
- The app forwards all missed calls and text messages from the baby device without waking the child. It runs over Wi-Fi, mobile data from Edge to 4G, and hotspots.
- The big catch with this app is that only 4 hours per month are free. However, thanks to the group mode, you only need to purchase the premium version on one device.
