You can rename your Wi-Fi network so that it is not confused with other networks in your home that have similar or even identical names.
Rename Wi-Fi: Router settings
To rename your Wi-Fi, you need to access the router settings in any browser.
- Access the router settings by entering the IP address of the device in the address bar of your browser using your keyboard and pressing Enter. You may need to log in with a password.
- In most cases, you will find the password for the router settings in your contract documents or in the paperwork that came with the device. If it is one of the many standard passwords such as admin, 1234, or password, change it as soon as possible for security reasons.
- Now switch to the Wi-Fi settings. Depending on your router model, you will find these under the tab Wi-Fi, Wireless, Network, or similar terms.
- Then look for the sub-item Wi-Fi name, SSID, or something similar. You may need to open another submenu first. This varies from router to router.
- Here you can now enter a new name and save the settings.
- Please note: You will need to reconnect all connected devices after changing the name. Access will be reset afterwards.
Rename your Wi-Fi network: How to find your router IP
As already mentioned in the instructions, the IP address of your Wi-Fi router is important for making numerous network settings. Typical IP addresses are 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, but there are also model-specific numbers.
- Sometimes you can find the IP on the back or bottom of the router. For some models, abbreviations such as fritz.box, speedport.ip, or easy.box also work.
- If you are using Windows, determine the IP address using ipconfig. To do this, open a Run window using the key combination [Windows]+[R].
- Enter the term cmd and confirm your entry with OK. An input window will open.
- Now type ipconfig on your keyboard and press [Enter]. Look for the entry IPv4 address or IPv6 address to view the IP address.
- You can also find out the IP address on your Mac. To do this, hold down the [Shift] and [alt] keys simultaneously while clicking on the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
- You will then see a list of all important network data. You will find it under IP address.
- Note: Alternatively, simply use an online service such as WhatIsMyIPAdress. These scan your network and display the IP address directly.
