Google: Enable two-step verification

by Michaela

Enabling “two-step verification” for your Google Account provides an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.

Enable “two-step verification” in your Google Account

When you sign in to your Google account, you usually enter your username and password. With “two-step verification,” you’ll also receive a code via text message on your cell phone, which you’ll need to enter during the sign-in process.

  1. Sign in to your Google account on your smartphone or desktop and go to your account settings if you want to enable “two-step verification.”
  2. Then select the “Security” menu.
  3. Now tap “2-Step Verification” and confirm by tapping “Get Started.”
  4. You will now need to verify your identity by entering your password.
  5. In the next window, you’ll see the devices that are logged in with the same account. The prompts will be sent to the devices listed.
  6. If your device or smartphone isn’t listed, click “Can’t see your device?”.
  7. Click “Try it now” to continue. As a test, a prompt will be sent to your devices, where you’ll need to confirm the process by selecting “Yes.”
  8. In the next step, you’ll need to enter your phone number so the codes can be sent to you. You can choose between receiving a text message or a phone call.
  9. Optionally, you can also tap “Use other security options” and select alternative methods, such as logging in via the Google Authenticator app, which also uses “two-factor authentication” (2FA). You can adjust these settings at any time in your account settings.
  10. Enter the code to complete the setup process. Your account is now additionally protected.

Possible Issues When Setting Up Google Two-Factor Authentication

You may encounter issues when setting up and using “two-step verification,” but these can usually be resolved quickly:

    • Outdated cell phone number: Check to see if an outdated cell phone number is stored in your Google Account. This could prevent you from receiving the text message or phone call with the code. You can view your registered number under “Security.”
    • Lost device: If you lose your device, it’s helpful to have saved backup codes beforehand. If you don’t have the codes on hand, it may be a good idea to restore your account. Alternatively, you can contact your mobile carrier to get a device with the same number that is registered with Google as security information.
