Many people find it difficult to know whether to use “seit” or “seid.” However, there is a simple mnemonic device that can help you tell the words apart.
Seit or seid: When to use “seit”
The words ‘seit’ and “seid” are often confused in German – especially in emails, chats, and social media. But the difference is easy to remember.
- The word “seit” is used to indicate time. It is a preposition or conjunction that indicates a period of time or a point in time.
- Just remember this mnemonic: “If you’re talking about time, always use seit with ‘t’.” Both “Zeit” and ‘seit’ end with a “t,” so it’s easy to remember.
- A few example sentences will make it even clearer when to use “seit”:
- “I’ve really enjoyed dancing since I was a child.”
- “Since I grew up, I’ve had nothing but stress.”
- “It’s been raining non-stop since yesterday.”
- “I have been living in Berlin since 2010.”
When “seid” is correct
Unlike “seit,” you use “seid” as a verb. This is because it is the second person plural form of the verb “sein.”
- In many cases, ‘seid’ is used when the personal pronoun “ihr” also appears in a sentence.
- Test whether you can replace “seid” with “wir sind” in the sentence. If it still makes sense, then the spelling with “d” at the end is correct.
- Example sentences: “Are you out and about today too?”
- “You are the best friends anyone could wish for.”
- “Would you be so kind as to help?”
Why correct spelling is important
Even though there is only one letter between “seid” and “seit,” it is important to use correct spelling in both private and professional contexts.
- In digital communication, such as job applications, business emails, LinkedIn profiles, or publicly visible posts, correct wording and spelling convey professionalism, care, and credibility.
- Mistakes such as confusing “seit” and “seid” can give the impression that you lack accuracy or language skills – especially when introducing yourself in writing or communicating with customers.
