If error code 10 appears in Device Manager, Windows cannot access the device. This is primarily a driver problem.
Device Manager: How to fix error code 10
Error code 10 indicates that a specific device cannot be started. This is usually due to an outdated driver.
- To fix the problem, start Device Manager. Then search the list for the device with the error. A small exclamation mark is usually displayed here.
- Right-click on the device and select Properties. The error with code 10 will be displayed under Device status.
- Then switch to the Driver tab and click on the Update driver button.
- Select Search automatically for drivers to download and install the latest driver from the Internet. No further steps are usually necessary.
- If you have already copied the software to a USB stick or downloaded it to your PC, select Search for drivers on my computer instead. The Device Manager will use the driver to update the device.
- Alternatively, many manufacturers offer the latest drivers as installation files. Download these and run the installation. You can then check in Device Manager to see if the warning message is still displayed.
- Note: You can also use the driver software update manager or the integrated hardware and device troubleshooter in Windows to fix the problem. These perform the search and update process with just a few clicks.
Device Manager Error Code 10: Reinstalling the driver helps
- To do this, open Device Manager on your device again. Then right-click on the component.
- Remove the driver using the Uninstall device option in the context menu. You will then need to restart your computer.
- During the restart, Windows will automatically install the latest driver for the device. This will resolve even persistent Code 10 errors.
