Burning a DVD or CD under Windows 10 – here’s how

by Dani

Under Windows 10, you no longer need to use an extra programme to burn DVDs.

  • First insert the blank CD or DVD into the drive and close it again.
  • Then switch to Windows Explorer. This can be done with the key combination [Win] + [E].
  • Double-click on the drive.
If you receive an error message, right-click on the drive and select Open AutoPlay…. from the menu. In the new window, click Burn Files to Disk.
  • A dialogue window opens. There you can give the DVD or CD a name and select a variant for the burning process. If in doubt, take the first option.
  • Like a USB memory stick: Save, edit and delete files on the data medium at any time. The data carrier can be used on computers and Windows XP or newer operating systems (live file system).
  • With a CD/DVD player: Files to be burned in groups and individual files cannot be edited or removed after burning. The disc can also be used on most computers (Mastered).
  • In Explorer you can now see that there are no files on the CD or DVD yet. To add files, simply drag them into the window.
  • These files will then be burned directly onto the disc. This may take a while depending on the size of the files and the properties of the drive.
  • Be sure to wait until the process is complete. If you cancel the process prematurely, the burned disc may not be readable afterwards.

Burning a DVD/CD – more tips

You can also copy or burn a music CD under Windows 10 without additional software.

  • Of course, you don’t have to use the Windows 10 burning function. Alternatively, you can use a burning programme such as CDBurnerXP or BurnAware.
  • You can burn an ISO image with the free programme ImgBurn.
By the way, you can open ISO files directly and do not necessarily have to burn them.
  • If you want to burn a video onto a DVD so that it can then be played on a DVD player, you have to take other things into account. We explain the individual steps in a separate practical tip.
  • If, on the other hand, you want to burn photos onto a CD, we have summarised all the necessary information for you in another practical tip.
